Sharing a Story with NZ’s Athlete of the Century Peter Snell

Former Olympic gold medalist Peter Snell has been visiting New Zealand and playing in the World Masters Games in his newly adopted sport Table Tennis. We lived a few doors away from him in Taylors Road, Mt Albert in the 1960s. I wrote an opinion piece about Snell in the Otago Daily Times in 2012 and when I caught up with him in Auckland recently, I took the opportunity of giving him a copy of my article. Click on this link for the original piece.

Catching up with Peter Snell

Port Chalmers

“If you want to hang about here, you’d better learn to swim,” warned his father  – and pushed him off the wharf.

Port Chalmers and its industrial edginess evokes a childhood memory. Click here to read a recent piece of mine in the Otago Daily Times

Writer Dan Davin to feature in Dunedin Writers Walk

Here’s a link to a piece of mine that appeared on the London based website New Zealand Studies Network (UK and Ireland) back in October 2013 where I stated a case for the honouring of NZ writer Dan Davin in the Writers Walk in Dunedin’s Octagon. Well, after passing the hat around his friends and receiving a grant from the Alexander McMillan Trust, I’m pleased to announce that the plaque for Davin has been cast and will be unveiled at a special Dunedin Writers and Readers Festival event on 8th May 2015.

Tale of an unquiet mind

Here’s a previously published piece of mine based on a childhood memory of “madness” that takes a journey inside Auckland’s former Oakley Mental Hospital. Under the tab Published Pieces, click on Descent into “madness” – tale of an unquiet mind.
